Discover this magnificent city through its history and traditions as you visit the Monuments of the Portuguese Discoveries, drive through the most historic parts of the city, and visit the city museum.
You will first travel to the Belem, quarter where you will find many beautiful monuments from the 15th and 16th centuries. A brief photo stop will be made outside the Belem Tower, a UNESCO World Heritage site, which marks the point of departure of some of the Portuguese maritime explorations. You will also see the nearby Monument to the Discoveries (Padrao dos Descobrimentos), built to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the 'death' of Prince Henry the Navigator.
Next, you will have time to visit the Church of S. Jerome Monastery, another UNESCO World Heritage site and a masterpiece of the Manueline style of architecture. You will then visit the Visit to Palacio da Ajuda, constructed to house the Royal family after the 1755 earthquake and tsunami. The palace finally became a permanent residence of the royal family during the reign of King Luis I and his wife, Maria Pia of Savoy. Most of the palace interiors were designed during King Luis I's reign by his wife, Queen Maria Pia and Possidonio da Silva, their architect.
After your guided tour enjoy some free time at Restauradores or Marques de Pombal to make the route of Alfama using the Digital Walking tour. The Digital Walking tour allows guest to visit areas such as Alfama and Baixa-Chiado, areas that are closed due to heavy vehicles. An interactive guide that is activated via GPS, with audio playback and allows guests the freedom/opportunity to choose the route at their own pace.
Please Note: The visit to Palacio da Ajuda will be replaced with a visit to the Royal Treasure Museum on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
This tour ends at the Alfama quarter, which is located approximately 10 minutes from the cruise ship pier, for guests who would like to further explore the old town.

Madeira receives roughly a million visitors each year, and it's your turn to see why. This Jeep safari takes you away from the crowds and steers you into some of the island's untouched areas. These areas are ripe for exploration with a Jeep. And since your Jeep has off-road capabilities, expect to make the most of the road less traveled.
Throughout this Madeira Jeep safari, head towards Quinta Grande with passage through Camara de Lobos to observe the bay. As you pass by Quinta Grande, you'll make a brief stop at the viewpoint of Faja dos Padres, for photos and be provided with some commentary from your guide about this beautiful location.
You'll then travel through roads of the forest of the eucalyptus, towards the Jardim da Serra, where it is possible to observe the fauna and flora. During your journey, you'll make a stop brief stop so you can receive information about the introduction of the Eucalyptus tree in Madeira Island.
Once you get to the Jardim da Serra, you'll make a quick pit stop for some coffee (at your own expense) and a bathroom break. Then you will go to the Miradouro of Boca dos Namorados--at 1000 meters of altitude, you can see the Curral das Freiras and listen to the guide's explain the history of this famous location.
After the viewpoint of Boca dos Namorado, you'll descend towards Funchal, as you head back to the harbor. Keep an eye out, as you will pass through the Estreito of Camara de Lobos where you'll be treated to a lovely view of the local vineyards.
