You will first travel to the Belem, quarter where you will find many beautiful monuments from the 15th and 16th centuries. A brief photo stop will be made outside the Belem Tower, a UNESCO World Heritage site, which marks the point of departure of some of the Portuguese maritime explorations. You will also see the nearby Monument to the Discoveries (Padrao dos Descobrimentos), built to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the 'death' of Prince Henry the Navigator.
Next, you will have time to visit the Church of S. Jerome Monastery, another UNESCO World Heritage site and a masterpiece of the Manueline style of architecture. You will then visit the Visit to Palacio da Ajuda, constructed to house the Royal family after the 1755 earthquake and tsunami. The palace finally became a permanent residence of the royal family during the reign of King Luis I and his wife, Maria Pia of Savoy. Most of the palace interiors were designed during King Luis I's reign by his wife, Queen Maria Pia and Possidonio da Silva, their architect.
