Canoe Mendenhall Lake Tour

Southeast Alaska has marvelous historic origins. The Tlingit Indians, the region's first people, would traverse the waters in hand-carved canoes, enjoying an intimate experience with the surrounding natural wonders. During this Juneau excursion, you can re-enact the experience aboard a canoe, venturing within yards of the majestic Mendenhall Glacier.

Your Juneau excursion begins with a scenic ride to beautiful Mendenhall Lake. Board your authentic Alaskan Native-style canoe, which holds up to 19 passengers, and begin your unforgettable Alaska adventure. Small-sized groups allow for an intimate family experience. A limited U.S. Forest Service permit grants you the ability to experience one of Alaska's most notable natural wonders up close.

Paddle across Mendenhall Lake's serene waters, navigating past floating icebergs, admiring spectacular glacier views and towering peaks. Your expert tour guide shares natural history and Native lore as you travel across the gorgeous waters. Keep an eye out for wildlife such as arctic terns, eagles, goats, salmon, otters, bears, and more. The best part of this scenic tour is when you venture within a safe distance of the massive, breathtaking face of the Mendenhall Glacier. Experience the thrill of skirting the base of the roaring Nugget Falls afterward. A delicious snack is served on the beach at Nugget falls which gives you a great opportunity to refuel for your return paddle across the lake.

Book this Juneau shore excursion for an awe-inspiring adventure across Mendenhall Lake aboard a traditional canoe. The Mendenhall Glacier is ready to impress!

This was a really fun experience! The guide did an wonderful job to guide the young men/ladies to paddle up close to the glacier. That was amazing and very memorable for our family! Our family including three teenage had a great time for our first canoe experience! My husband in the last minute decided to give up his fishing trip to join us for canoe. He enjoyed so much and felt lucky he made the right decision.

Our guide was knowledgeable and a strong lead on the lake. We got to canoe close to the glacier and stop on the shore next to the nearby waterfall. I would give 5 stars to the guide, and 2 stars for the people on the canoe! Many people opted out of rowing or were really inconsistent, which was frustrating. If you take this excursion, know that you should be doing a little work! My in-laws are in their 70s and did more paddling than the majority of the other large party that were on our canoe. Still, it was a beautiful experience!

It will take some time and effort to row over to the glacier area (and back!) but will be worth it. Close up to some floating ice, wade in the water (they provide boots) near a water fall, get nearer to the glacier front. Leader tells stories and points out interesting stuff.

The guide was fabulous. Paddling across the lake to this glacier was amazing. You can be fit or not - i.e. let everyone else paddle. It's really a dragon boat, so you paddle just one side. Cant get as close to the glacier as I would have liked, but was able to touch an ice berg - a piece of ice that had broken off from the glacier.
