Cartagena Mud Volcano Bath Experience
Venture beyond the bustling streets of Cartagena to discover one of Colombia’s most unique natural attractions, the Totumo Mud Volcano. Located in a rural community about 45 minutes outside the city, this small yet fascinating volcanic formation offers an authentic and down-to-earth experience far removed from the luxuries of urban life.
Upon arrival, you’ll climb a simple wooden staircase to the top of the 15-meter-high (50 feet) volcano, where you’ll descend into the thick, mineral-rich mud. The buoyant consistency makes floating effortless, creating a light, weightless sensation that many find both fun and therapeutic. The mud is believed to contain beneficial minerals such as silica, magnesium, and sulfur, which have been traditionally valued for their skin-rejuvenating properties.
As you relax in the warm, dense mud, you’ll have the option to receive a brief massage from local attendants who work at the site for an additional cost of $10 US per person (not included), or have photos taken for an additional cost of $ 5 US (not included). Afterward, a short walk will take you to the nearby lagoon, where you can rinse off before changing into dry clothes. You will have the option to receive assistance in washing the mud from your body if there are areas you're unable to reach. Keep in mind that while the setting is natural and rustic, the hospitality of the local community adds to the charm of this off-the-beaten-path adventure.
Before heading back to Cartagena, take a moment to enjoy a light snack of local specialties, such as arepas or empanadas, accompanied by a refreshing soda or water.
As your journey back to the ship begins, enjoy a brief overview of Cartagena, where you’ll pass by notable landmarks and learn more about the city’s history and culture from your guide. This provides a wonderful way to wrap up your experience, offering a glimpse of Cartagena’s heritage before returning to the port.
This excursion offers an unfiltered glimpse into rural Colombian life while allowing you to partake in a natural phenomenon unlike any other. While the facilities are basic, the experience is unforgettable—an adventure that connects you with the earth in a way that few destinations can offer.
