Private Caves of Drach and Porto Cristo

After departing the pier in Palma, you will proceed inland towards the town of Manacor, the second largest town on Mallorca and where occupation has been dated back to around 2000 BC. Along the way, you will pass the village of Santa Margalid which dates back to the Roman time. During the drive, your guide will give you information on the tour itinerary and interesting local information.

On arrival in Manacor, there will be a short visit to the pearl "factory" of Majorica. The production of artificial pearls, especially the pearl factory Majorica (founded in 1902) has given world reputation to the city. The factory is a combination retail store as well as workshop, where the pearls are produced and created into jewelry. Guests will have the opportunity to see the manufacturing process and learn the history of this emblematic Majorcan company. There is also a cafe and olive wood products exhibition and store where you can see the wonderful patterns left by this gorgeous wood.

The visit to the Caves of Drach (dragon caves) takes approximately 90 minutes. The caves consist of four large caves, named Black, White, Cave of Luis Salvador, and Cave of the French. They are connected to each other and extend to a depth of 80 feet and reach a length of almost a mile and a half. Here you will have the opportunity to enjoy a classical music concert and make an optional crossing of Lake Martel in a small wooden boat, which is truly a unique experience. Lake Martel is the largest subterranean lake in Europe.

You will then drive to the nearby seaside fishing town of Porto Cristo, where you will have approximately 45 minutes of free time to purchase lunch on your own at one of the many cafes, bars, and restaurants that line the streets of this laid back growing resort area. Your guide will recommend nice places to eat, local points of interest, or the beach if you wish to go for a refreshing swim. From here, you will return to the cruise pier.

Please Note: Based on crowds, the order of sites visited may be changed.

Beautiful day to explore

Our guide and driver were the best on the Island. The timing of our arrival to the caves was perfect and the sites of town were great.

Interesting, but a little touristy
July 08, 2014
The guide was very enthusiastic and the caves themselves are very intersting. However, the location is very crowded during the tourist season and it is very touristy. The underground concert was cool, but the wait for the boat ride is lengthy and the actual time in the boat is very brief (and not worth it). Porto Cristo is very average and the beach you are taken too is very small and touristy. The pearl factory was somewhat interesting and brief. I enjoyed the caves and they are very unique, but afterwards I wished I had spent the day hiring a local boat and visiting some of the really pretty beaches on Mallorca.
