Hamburg Highlights

Relax in comfort on your drive from Kiel port to Hamburg, where your tour of the city awaits.

One of Germany's 3 city-states and the second-largest city in Germany after Berlin, Hamburg was historically once a part of the Hanseatic League and has today become one of the most beautiful and exciting cities in Europe. The city became a well-known tourist destination due to its wild red-light district but is now attracting a more discerning clientele with its modern architecture in the form of the Elbphilharmonie, Speicherstadt, and the neighboring Hafencity, not to mention the canals, Alster, stunning Rathaus, and high-end shopping.

The city's label, "The Gateway to the World", maybe a presumptuous statement, but in the Middle Ages, Hamburg became a hub of international trade which remains today. The city is also the wealthiest in the country and her maritime roots reverberate from the port to energized neighborhoods overflowing with international flavors, modern architecture, and the notorious Reeperbahn red-light district.

Your guide will lead you directly to the historic heart of Hamburg to see the stunning Town Hall, St. Nikolai Church (a burnt-out shell from Allied bombings in WWII), and the Trost Bridge in the heart of the medieval city. This small but historically important bridge, built in 1881, spans the Nikolaifleet and is decorated with models of Bishop Ansgar, who founded the city's cathedral, and Count Adolf III von Schauenburg, who established the merchant's district of Neustadter. Known as the "Comfort Bridge," it was said to offer comfort to those on their way to trial at the town hall.

The UNESCO listed Speicherstadt is the largest warehouse district in the world where the buildings stand on timber-pile foundations, oak logs, in this case. Located in the port of Hamburg, within the HafenCity quarter, it was built between 1883 to 1927.

View the modern architectural splendor of the Elbphilharmonie, an icon of extraordinary structure overpowering the skyline that is made of glass and brick. Elevating architecture front and center to public debate and awareness, this is just the most well-known and identifiable of many buildings dominating the city.

You will then be given 1 hour of free time to further explore more of the city on your own. At the scheduled time, you will visit the Beatles Monument before returning to the port in Kiel and reboarding your ship.
