Scenic Hike and Float
Scenic Hike & Taiya River Raft Float Tour in Skagway, Alaska
Setting out from downtown Skagway toward your Scenic Hike and Float Excursion, you will drive 10 eye-popping miles along the coastal road to the head of the Chilkoot Trail in Dyea, once an abandoned Gold Rush town, and now a National Park.
On your 1.5 to 2 hour hike, you will retrace the steps of the Gold Rush stampeders on the famous Chilkoot Trail, hiking through a green, moss-covered northern temperate rainforest over uneven, hilly terrain for the first mile, and then on mostly flat ground for the remainder. The total elevation gain on this Skagway shore trip is 300 feet. You will learn about the gold rush and natural history, and have time for taking photos. The total distance hiked on this moderate trail is approximately 2 miles.
At the end of the one-way hike, you will meet with the raft and suit up for a relaxing river float on the tranquil Taiya River. Along with your group of at most 11 guests, you will sit back and let your guide do the paddling. As you float along, they will point out wildlife, native plants, and tell stories of the area's fascinating history. The float time on this Skagway rafting excursion is approximately 40 to 45 minutes on the river. After the rafting, enjoy a riverside snack.
Please Note: The hiking part of this Alaska tour is strenuous and requires guests to be in good physical shape.

Guide was very informative and careful of our safety on the hike. We enjoyed the hike but it was more stressful than we expected. Would have worn hiking boots! Scenery was gorgeous and the float was a gentle experience in the wild.

Very nice trail, guide very nice and very cautious. Trail not to extreme but not for children under 10. Nice soft float. didn't see any fauna.

I LOVED my experience on this hike and float. My brother and I were with a small group of six people which was the perfect size. We were led by Becca (I think that was her name!) and she was a lively and knowledgeable young lady whom I thoroughly enjoyed as our guide. The hike had a few steep parts but it was still a fairly easy hike for me though I wouldn't recommend it for people with knee or hip issues, it may be too challenging. There was a little mud, so be prepared for that, and there are mosquitoes who were very hungry (one even got me through the leg of my pants!). Use the restroom before the hike begins otherwise your will have to use the “facili-trees”. The float was relaxing with stunning views. I would definitely go again!
