Santorini Volcano and Hot Springs

Climb aboard a boat for an adventurous journey to the world famous Caldera. 3,500 years ago, Santorini witnessed an awesome volcanic explosion in the Aegean Sea, which created a huge depression over a mile deep. This depression covered by water is called the Caldera. The Santorini caldera is approximately four miles in diameter. On the other side of the Caldera is Nea Kameni, an impressive volcano. This is your destination! The ride is approximately 15 to 20 minutes. During the short trip, the multilingual escort on board will give passengers some basic information about the volcano and the time to be back on board.

A free leaflet with a presentation of the volcano is available ashore at the entrance of the volcano site. You will be provided time to explore the volcano's slope and, for the more adventurous, time to climb to the crater on your own. The terrain is often compared to a foreign planet, given its barren nature and extremely unique features and colors. Those choosing to climb to the crater will be rewarded with incredible views of Santorini and the Mediterranean Sea.

After your Santorini volcano tour visit, you will reboard your vessel and sail along the spectacular lava rock to a protected harbor, where you will anchor in deep water. From here you can relax and enjoy the majestic views, or swim ashore to enjoy the natural hot springs. Geologists believe the hot springs have concentrated iron and manganese, which are good for the body and have curative properties.

Your boat will carry you back to the pier in Fira, where you can catch a tender back to your ship, purchase a cable car or donkey ride up to Fira town, or if you are up for the challenge, climb the 500 or more steps.

Please Note: For those wishing to enter the volcano, there is a supplemental fee of 4 EUR per person to be paid at the site. Boats used on the tour hold up to 150 guests, and are shared by several tour groups. Tours are given in multiple languages. Crowds are to be expected at the volcano.

Enjoyed volcano
October 14, 2019
Interesting to be able to walk on volcanic crater. There was a lot of climbing, so would be strenuous for someone not accustomed to walking great distances. I enjoyed the hiking. I did not swim in the hot springs. One needs to be a strong swimmer and no life jackets are available. Interesting to see the changes in the water from the high sulfur levels.

The volcano was super awesome. The views were spectacular. The hot springs...eh. Cool, but I wish there had been a beach to go to instead. The volcano was amazing but be prepared for a lot of walking. I think we had 18K steps that day!

Good tour!

I really enjoyed diving off the big pirate ship type boat we sailed around on into the big blue ocean to get to the warmth of the hot springs. You do get a bit mucky, but it was so much fun! It wasn't as hot as I expected in the hot springs, which was a bit disappointing. The Volcano was ok. Not too exciting. A nice hike at least!

Enjoyable Excursion

Great trip. You travel via boat to the volcano then the hot springs ** Note: the price of the excursion does NOT include the fee to get into the volcano. ** It is a strenuous hike up the volcano but the views are great. You can take your time if needed. A guide goes with you and gives some commentary. Most info is in guide you get @ the volcano entrance. You have time to explore a bit (different trails). Hot springs are on another island. The boats stop in a little bay and you get into the water to swim over to the ""stream / cove"" area of the hot springs. No developed areas, just swim into the cove. The closer in the warmer the water. Close in, dark red material is suspended in the water, bottom and banks have this ""mud"". Can stain your swim suit so don't bring your best ! They tell you about this, but not until you get there. On the return trip they continue around the volcano island and you get more views of the Santorini side of the old volcano steep slopes, etc.
