Howler Monkey Sanctuary

Your adventure on this Belize excursion begins as you take a one hour scenic journey through the beautiful Belizean countryside on your way to the rainforest. As the Savannah lands meld away to the jungle you will be greeted by the loud, guttural howls of over 2,000 Black Howler monkeys.

The loudest of all mammals, Black Howler monkeys have calls that can be heard up to three miles away and were used as the T-Rex call in the movie Jurassic Park. These endangered animals, lovingly referred to as Baboons by the locals, are vegetarian in nature and live in groups of 4 to 12 individuals.

Upon arrival, you will be given a short, 20-minute introduction and then you will be permitted to walk around the Community Baboon Sanctuary. Observe the Black Howler monkeys in the trees above you amidst iguanas, birds and other animals. Your knowledgeable guide will coax them down for food or even a photo with you! Find out fascinating monkey facts as you watch them nest and climb along the trees for food. Stop in the museum to view the informative displays and pick up a tee shirt or two in the gift shop. You will spend about one hour at the sanctuary before heading back to the cruise pier.

This standard Belize tour is 3.5 hours long and has limited wheelchair transportation; however, guests must be able to walk over certain terrains including trekking down a slope. Semi-domesticated black Howler monkeys are only found in Belize - sign up now to guarantee your turn to see and hear these popular animals in person.

Seeing Howler Monkeys in Belize
June 21, 2023
My wife and I took this excursion and we had a great time. We were taken by a local guide to the monkey sanctuary where we got to take some photos with them up close. Then, since we still had plenty of time before we had to board our ship, we paid the guide to take us to the Belize zoo, rum distillery, and give us a tour of the town.

Very authentic animal loving experience
January 16, 2020
This was our favorite excursion! My 12 year old son and I decided to do this as we love animals but didn't want a long day. We went into it thinking it was an enclosed sanctuary with cages. To our pleasant surprise it's a community that protects the Howler Monkeys so they stay in the area and can be found by the guides in the wild. It's cage free and natural. We had 1 guide for 3 people. You literally just take a walk into the nearby jungle and the guide knows each family unit and where they may be. They bring a small amount of fruit to allow you to feed them. The guides seemed very safe in the way they interacted with the monkeys. It felt like a very real very natural interaction. Since my son and I were the only one signed up from our ship so we had a personal driver as well. Bernard was fantastic! On top of the Howler Monkey visit we had a personal guide giving us all the info on Belize and it's history.!

We enjoyed the Howler Monkey Sanctuary. We walked through a wooded area to get to them and we enjoyed the talk our guide gave us on the way to the monkeys. We learned how to interact with them to keep us all safe.

Monkey sanctuary

Was a very long drive to see the monkeys. The man at the sanctuary was very informative and the monkeys were great to see up close, however we found there to be too much driving to get there and back. Expected a little more than what we got.

Howler monkey experience was great
August 13, 2018
Our guide was awesome. We were a little late getting off the boat due to some weather issues, but that wasn't a problem for our driver. He was very friendly and informative. During the drive, he gave lots of local information. He even took us to a great little local restaurant for lunch. The people at the Howler monkey sanctuary were great too. Very imformative and a wonderful, upclose experience with a monkey. Highly recommended.

interesting experience

Unusual experience to see, feed and hear the howler monkey. However it took a long time to get to the place over very rough roads and with only 2 other people in the van with us. We really weren't sure if it was a legitimate excursion. The other couple got out at the first stop and wouldn't return with the van driver. He was actually a nice guy and tried to make the drive interesting with telling us about the city. Would not go again but glad we experienced seeing the monkeys.
