Tour Juneau and the Mendenhall Glacier
Juneau is one of the most unique state capitals in the United States. Although Juneau isn't an island, it is land locked, and you can only get to it by air or sea. This exciting half-day program will give you an orientation of Juneau, and a visit to the Mendenhall Glacier and Visitor's Center.
Your Juneau shore excursion begins in the historical downtown district, where you will see the streets lined with gift shops, jewelry shops, king crab shacks and local fish restaurants. This Juneau tour will take you right by the Governor's Mansion, the State Capitol, and the world-famous Red Dog Saloon.
Departing the downtown area, you will make your way north to the Valley Area and the Mendenhall Glacier. Along the way you will see boat harbors filled with Alaskan fishing boats, as well as boathouses and the Mendenhall Wetland Refuge. On clear days, you can see the majestic Chilkat Mountains in the distance.
Once you arrive at the park, you will have some time to walk around the Visitor Center, which has an elevated view of the glacier. The Visitor's Center hosts exhibits as well as a short film about the Juneau Icefields. Admission to the Visitor Center is included in the price of the Juneau tour.
For those guests feeling more adventurous in their Mendenhall Glacier Excursions, there are several short hiking paths and walking trails around the lake area, including Photo Point Trail, which winds along Mendenhall Lake to an unobstructed view of the glacier face. At the appointed time, meet your guide for the trip back to town.
The Mendenhall Glacier Juneau excursion comes to an end with a stop at famous Douglas Island, a historic mining community, for photo opportunities and panoramic views across the ocean to downtown Juneau. You will then arrive back to the main cruise ship terminal.

Very interesting narration by bus driver. The visitor center had an interesting film that explained the glacier. The glacier is retreating at a fast past and the global warming story is well told but sad.

Our guide is very nice and friendly. He has lots of good stories and information during our drive. Be sure to hike to the waterfall at the Mendenhall Glacier stop. The city tour is just OK.

Disembarked Zaandam, tour company rep exactly where tour information said. Logged in, boarded bus, left on time. Bus immaculate, well maintained. Driver drove safely. Way out, guide gave city information, sites to see. Arrived, guide showed where bus will be, pickup time. Gave guidance how to get to Nugget Falls, see Glacier, park's information center. Headed down trail to see the falls, taking pictures along the way. Glacier was beautiful in the distance. Trail in good shape, paved until very end by the falls. At the falls mostly beach rock to walk on, easy to keep your balance. We took so many pictures of the falls and glacier. Water pouring off the cliff, could feel the force of it, the sound was awesome. Spent most of our time here, pictures, different angles, enjoying the moment. Close to departure time, headed back to pickup site. On time, returned to ship, ahead of departure time. Most enjoyable time here. Next time I'm in Juneau I'll be back.
