Kailua - Kona Overview by Segway

This 2 hour tour is the perfect introduction to Kailua-Kona.

After a brief training session, you and your guide will glide along Kuakini Highway heading to the "Old Kona Airport" - originally built as a WWII landing strip. Today it's a mile-long State Recreational Park where you can glide freely through a botanical garden. We then head to Kona Village and oceanfront Ali'I Drive, designated as a Hawaii Scenic Byway. We will get comfortable on our Segway's gliding along the "Royal Footsteps Along the Kona Coast." This byway offers archaeological sites that have survived over hundreds of years.

Gliding through the Village, learning about the area's rich Hawaiian History with stops at: Kailua Pier - the start and finishing point for the Ironman World Championship Triathlon. Across from the pier you can see the Ahu'ena Heiau, King Kamehameha the Great's retreat, where he planned the consolidation of the Hawaiian Islands with his warriors and where he worshipped during the last years of his life. This historic site is right next to the historic King Kamehameha Hotel.

You'll then glide along the waterfront to the Huli'hee Palace. Today, a museum, this Palace was a vacation retreat for Hawaii's Ali'i (monarchy) originally built out of lava rocks by High Chief John Adams Kuakini, the brother of King Kamehameha's wife. Over the years, it fell into despair and in 1927, the Daughters of Hawaii became the Palace's caretakers with six beautifully-furnished rooms in the Victorian style furnishings from King Kalakaua and his Queen, Kapiolani. The tour continues along Ali'i Drive, stopping at the Farmer's Market (on open days), and continue along to one of the small pocket beaches for a refreshment stop while we enjoy watching the surfers and talking story.

As we glide back through the Village, we make a stop at the historic Moku'Auikaua Church, the first Christian church on the island built in 1820 and it is located across the street from the Palace.
