Edinburgh On and Off Bus

If you want to visit Edinburgh at your own pace and with no rush, the double-decker hop on, hop off bus is your best option! You can get on and off all day long, with the same ticket, and learn about the history of the city through a comfortable audio system with earphones, narrated in several languages.

Edinburgh has been the capital of Scotland since the 15th century and stands proudly on seven hills, creating the dramatic skyline of this lively cosmopolitan city. What better way to see this fantastic city than from the top of a double decker bus? Compare Edinburgh's Old Town, where families lived in cramped conditions and rubbish was thrown out of the windows, to the elegant Georgian New Town with its three main streets and a square at either end. Hear about the hangings that took place in the Grassmarket, as you marvel at the impenetrable Castle Rock above you and hear about the attempts to capture Edinburgh Castle. See the Royal Mile, which joins Edinburgh Castle to the Palace of Holyrood House. Your tour will highlight all the things to do and see in Edinburgh as you tour through the city streets.

Please Note: Due to an event throughout August, the Johnston Terrace and Chambers Street stops will not be in operation until August 26th. The nearest bus stop to the cruise ship terminal is approximately 3.5 kilometers from the Leith Cruise Terminal, and can be reached by taxi (approximately 10 GBP). There are 12 stops on this route and it takes approximately 1 hour to complete the route without getting off. The bus runs every 30 minutes. The tour is narrated in English, Spanish, German, Italian, French, Portuguese, Mandarin, Japanese, and Russian. There is also a commentary for kids to enjoy called "Horrible Histories." The first and last tour times will be detailed in your electronic ticket.

The route includes the following stops:

  • St Andrew's Square
  • Lothian Road
  • Grassmarket
  • Lauriston Place
  • Johnston Terrace
  • Lawnmarket
  • Chambers Street
  • St Mary's Street (West)
  • Canongate

I love the hop on and hop off at each port as it was the best way to see the city in a day. One can get on and off at one's leisure for one amazing price.

A great way to get an overview of the city. Convenient stops near the Castle, Royal Mile, Arthur's Seat and the Parliament. Good commentary and history. We did this tour in July, 2017.

great way to see Ediburgh
July 24, 2017
This was a great way to see this city up close and with a good tour narrative. We were able to see the sites so much better from on top of the bus, jump off and explore and there was always another bus to jump on. We were comfortable and felt safe everywhere we went.

Bus was very accessible after getting off the train from Queensberry. Very friendly off duty bus driver who gave us very good info regarding the city highlights and history. We would recommend this excursion.
