Pompeii & Mount Vesuvius Tour from Naples

This tour has been specifically designed to allow you to view one of the world's most amazing archeological excavation sites and then drive to the top of Mt. Vesuvius and see firsthand what lead to Pompeii's demise. Accompanied by your guide, you will be provided detailed explanations while visiting both sites.

Begin your tour as your driver will take you to one of the most fascinating and vast archaeological sites which is in southern Italy's Campania region. Once a thriving and sophisticated Roman city, Pompeii was buried in meters of ash and pumice after the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. Near the coast of the Bay of Naples, this well-preserved site features excavated ruins that you can explore. Ever since the ancient Greeks settled in the area in the 8th century B.C., the region around Mount Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples attracted wealthy vacationers who wanted to soak up the sun and the scenery. By the turn of the first century A.D., the town of Pompeii, located about five miles from the mountain, was a flourishing resort for Rome's most distinguished citizens. People gathered in the 20,000-seat arena and lounged in the open-air squares and marketplaces. Elegant houses and elaborate villas lined the paved streets. Tourists, townspeople and slaves bustled in and out of small factories and artisans' shops, taverns and cafes, and brothels and bathhouses. On the eve of that fateful eruption in 79 A.D., scholars estimate that there were about 20,000 people living in Pompeii and the surrounding region. Your guide will explain and point out many interesting facts while you explore the grounds. When a group of explorers rediscovered the site in 1748, they were surprised to find that, underneath a thick layer of dust and debris, Pompeii was mostly intact. The buildings, artifacts and skeletons left behind in the buried city have taught us a great deal about everyday life in the ancient world.

Have free time for shopping and to take a break for your lunch (at your own expense) before you next journey to Mt. Vesuvius.

Once you have arrived at the mountain you will be provided with detailed explanation of the area from a professional vulcanological guide. Mount Vesuvius, near the Bay of Naples, is hundreds of thousands of years old and has erupted more than 50 times. Its most famous eruption took place in the year 79 A.D., when the volcano buried the ancient Roman city of Pompeii under a thick carpet of volcanic ash. Walk to the top of the crater and gaze out over the terrain as you contemplate the power of this beast.

Your driver will then take you back to the pier area and your ship as you conclude your own personal walk through ancient history with this Pompeii cruise excurion.

A Must!
July 21, 2023
Date: July 13, 2023 Wow! This tour was incredible (for the history and experience). Seeing the ancient site of Pompeii was absolutely breathtaking and brought history to life. The line to get in was very. very slow, but once we were in, we were golden. Our guide was amazing and we got to see a lot. Before heading to Mt. Vesuvius, we had a surprise stop at a pizza restaurant (probably why the entry fees were more expensive than stated). Pretty yummy. At Mt. Vesuvius, if you want to climb up, be sure you've got plenty of water and great shoes because you're walking up a steady incline (15-18% grade, I think I heard) on very loose gravel (and you have to walk back down). The views at the crater are just stunning. It is worth the climb, but it isn't easy.

An Incredible Day
July 16, 2023
I was concerned at first. The port was so crowded with drivers, tour guides, and everyone else, so it was really hard to find Connie - of no fault of her own, she's just a little short. Once we gathered everyone together and got on our way, everything was smooth and completely enjoyable. Short ride to Pompeii in a comfortable bus, we met our two tour guides and divided up and had a wonderful (thought too short for me) tour of the ruins in Pompeii. I would love to come back and spend a couple of days exploring Pompeii. Afterwards, we took off to Vesuvius and stopped about halfway up the hairpin turn filled road to a beautiful mountainside restaurant where we enjoyed authentic Napolitan Pizza. Then off to Vesuvius. It was a strenuous hike, but well worth it. The panoramic views of Naples, Pompeii, Sorento, and Capri were absolutely breathtaking. Would do this tour again in a heartbeat.

Was well worth it

We just returned form a recent NCL cruise from the Rome port of the Mediterranean sea with three Shore Excursions tours including the this tour Pompeii and Mt Vesuvius . It was an awesome day with them. Seeing Pompeii with a professional guide narrating with good headsets. Then we were taken to Mt. Vesuvius for a steep climb to the top of the crater that is optional. I was very impressed with Shore Excursions. They were very professional and offered essentially the same tour but even better than what the ship was offering but for a much better price. Their buses were all very clean and new Mercedes Benz. The guides were all educated in the subjects and local traditions and customs and spoke English well. I will use Shore excursions again on every cruise from now on when available.

Fantastic day

8am port pick up. Francesco our “tour facilitator” was terrific! Told him we needed to be back by 4pm and was conscious throughout whole day to ensure we were! NOTE: you do pick up other patrons on route! We thought would have been just ship but we had @ 5 stops .@ 45 min before journey to Pompeii. POMPEII: massive! Could have spent entire day just here. Our guide was knowledgeable and weaved us theough the crowds to get better views. This place is a masterpiece. To imagine what happened here 2000 years ago and to be excavated with some prestine areas is nothing short or a miracle. LUNCH: Was not expecting to be included but WAS! Wonderful pizza lunch 1/2 way to Mt. Vesuvius. Beautiful scenery and food! MT. VESUVIUS: Wear RUNNERS! STEEP incline to top. Would not suggest for anyone with mobility issues. Ground is rocky terrain and switchbacks.. Worth the hike, take water.about 20 minutes at a solid pace. Booking stated “strenuous”. It is ! All in all absolutely amazing day .

Slow Start
October 28, 2019
A good tour except for the very beginning. The bus had to stop to pick up ONE passenger who never showed up and after a half hour wait (apparently company policy) we finally got going. Can’t help but feel that we were short changed that half hour during our tour of Pompeii. Our guide was excellent but was rushed to complete our tour on time. Lunch was a great break and we had enough time to hike up Mt. Vesuvius. Our tour got back to the ship at the time stated.
