Private Half Day Ketchikan Highlights

Meet your local, friendly and knowledgeable driver at the pier area after debarking your ship and get ready for a true taste of Alaska! Your guide will give you the very best options of the day depending on weather conditions and where crowds may be expected.

Customize your day and go to the places and do the things that most interest you. Ketchikan is known for its wildlife, totems, history, hiking trails, sightseeing, whale watching and salmon. But this just names a few of the options you have before you and you can plan your very own itinerary.

This is truly the beginning of the last frontier. Ketchikan is situated at the southernmost entrance to Alaska's famed Inside Passage - a network of waterways that wind through some of the most picturesque and beautiful wilderness in the world.

It is safe to say the local wildlife outnumber the people and here you can almost always spot bald eagles, Sitka black-tailed deer, mountain goats, wolves and black bears. Plus, there are over 100 species of migrating birds and this is just above sea level! The waters surrounding Ketchikan are home to porpoise, river otters, seals, sea lions, Orca and humpback whales. Nature is all around so it will not be difficult to go home without seeing some of it. The nearby Misty Fiords National Monument is a glacier-carved wilderness featuring snowcapped mountains and waterfalls making for idyllic scenery.

The evidence of Native Alaskans is everywhere in Ketchikan, from a colorfully painted city bus to Chief Johnson's Totem Pole at the center of town. Ketchikan boasts the largest number of totem poles in Alaska, a collection that is on display throughout the town and includes recently carved poles and some that are more than 100 years old. The Totem Heritage Center, which offers classes in Native arts, houses a large collection of Native artifacts, including several ancient totem poles, cedar bark baskets, beaded regalia, button robes, and other beautifully hand-crafted works of art. The city buses even sport the evidence of the local artisans at work.

As far back as history has been recorded here, and no doubt even before that, Alaska's first people harvested salmon from Ketchikan Creek in their summer fish camps. The city was later founded in 1900 and attracted a diverse population of miners, fishermen and working gals giving this outpost town a very colorful past. Feisty salmon pass through Ketchikan as well and spawn here in summer making for a frenzied atmosphere of jumping fish. Enormous runs of salmon migrate from the open ocean into these protected waters and after the construction of major salmon canneries, Ketchikan became known as the "Salmon Capital of the World." You can visit the salmon hatchery and learn everything there is to know about this colorful fish.

There truly is something for everyone in Ketchikan, offering varied ways to explore so choose this private tour option and get out there and discover for yourself!

Amazing Tour Of Ketchikan
March 03, 2020
We hadn't planned for the sudden change in Weather but as a great guide Dominic had. We viewed three Black Bears at a place called Herring cove and then he took us to this beautiful waterfall where he also picked some fresh Salmon Berries for us to try (Delicious). Then we went back into town and stopped at a private rock beach where Dominic picked starfish from ocean for the kids to hold and see. He really took the time to make sure our kids were entertained as well as making sure he kept the adults informed with local information and History. The rain got even worse and Dominic took us to a local gem of a place where there was a car museum and also i felt like a kid in a candy store when he took us all into this amazing gun museum. After the family dragged me out of there we went for a walk in the Tongass National forest where we saw another bear this time feeding in a waterfall. Was truly an amazing tour and Dominic i am sorry it has taken this long for this review.

Bear-viewing was amazing
November 01, 2019
We went bear watching in August and couldn't recommend it more highly. We had Dominic as a guide/Driver and he was excellent. He was enthusiastic, knowledgeable and made you feel at ease for the whole experience. We had the privilege of watching a young adult learning to fish and the drive to and from town was just incredible. Dominic gave us an amazing insight in to what Ketchikan was and is now.

Ketchikan was just amazing
November 01, 2019
This was a vacation we had been saving for over the past six years and I must say it was beyond our wildest dreams. We had four generations of family on the trip and Dominic catered to our every need. Was so nice to have a owner doing the tours and you can tell he has a passion for this industry. He even made sure we had a wheel chair for my grandmother who couldn't walk after being on the cruise ship so long. Dominic's knowledge of the island and the history was just mind blowing and that would have been enough but we got to see three bears feeding and also saw two Whales feeding on a small private beach. The finical was catching a fish with our own hands in the creek and melting it swim back away. Thank you Dominic for making that memory so special. You are now a friend of the family and I hope to have you come visit us in South Africa.

Amazing Tour

Not normally one to leave feedback because I always forget. Lol This tour was just amazing. My whole family loved every second of the tour. Dominic even bought his dog Bruno with him so that my children would have a pal to play with. We saw three Bears and two humpback whales as well. Really felt that Dominic gave us special tour but after speaking with others it seems he just makes everybody feel special. Can’t say much more than just an amazing tour.

Amazing Tour
October 10, 2019
I cant tell you how amazing this tour was. We have cruised all over the world and this is by far the best we have been on. Dominic made this tour amazing from start to finish. He picked us up at the Dock we came in on and he also bought his Dog with him so that our kids would be fully entertained the whole time. All we really wanted to see where bears because e had not seen any wildlife on the whole trip. He deviated from the normal tour end we saw bears in the first 20 minutes then we were lucky enought to see three humpback whales bubble net feeding. to top it all off we say so many eagles it was impossible to count. We gave Dominic every penny we had in our wallets for a tip and if we had more we would have given it to him. True highlight of my traveling life.

Wish we had visited Ketchikan first
October 10, 2019
Dominic and Bruno were amazing and the four hour tour flew by. We got to see what Ketchikan really is about. The stuff that Dominic Knows about Ketchikan is just amazing. Its nice to see a family owned company where the owner does all the tours. you can see he has a real passion for making the tour custom and enjoyable. Took our kids onto the beach hunting for crabs and star fish. We saw Bears and even some really small Deer. but for me being a fisherman the thousands of fish in the creek were just amazing.
