Meet up with your English-speaking shore excursion guide and board an air-conditioned vehicle for a ride to the Vinicola Del Norte, a rum factory that produces 1.5 million liters of white and dark rum each year. Step inside for a narrated tour, then sample the quality rums and pick up a bottle or two.

From there it's on to the Del Oro Chocolate Factory where you will learn how important the cultivation, processing and exporting of raw cacao and other cocoa products is to the island's economy. Much of Del Oro's delicious organic chocolate is exported to the United States and Europe. Next, you will take a ride over to Fort San Felipe, Puerto Plata's oldest surviving building. This 16th century structure was built by order of Philip II of Spain and helped protect the thriving city from French and English pirates.

Over at the Amber Museum you will find the largest collection of amber in the world, housed in a 2 story Victorian mansion. See how this fossilized tree resin is fashioned into beautiful jewelry and many other objects such as chess boards and animal totems. The Parque Independencia, or central plaza, will welcome you with its restored shops and gingerbread houses. While here, pop into the charming shops, stroll along the malecon, or just relax with a cup of famous Dominican Republic coffee as you observe the staff dressed up in vintage clothing.

Your last stop will be at the Cigar Factory where you will see how the local craftsmen produce the finest cigars. Take the opportunity to buy some cigars for yourself and your friends at discounted prices before your return trip to the port. This family-friendly tour is a great introduction for first timers to Puerto Plata and for those who are short on time yet want to see the city highlights. Reserve your spot today.
