Exclusive Best of Rome History Tour

Escape the crowded cruise line tours on this exclusive Best of Rome shore excursion. Your Civitavecchia tour begins when you are met at the cruise terminal. Here you will climb aboard your air-conditioned vehicle for the 80-minute drive to Rome.

When you arrive in Rome, you will walk through the narrow, winding streets of the old city to Piazza Navona, where you will find the most stunning baroque square, complete with the stunning Bernini fountain. Then continue on to the Pantheon, a fine example of ancient Roman architecture (outside visit), which was built as a temple in Ancient Rome in the year A.D.126. Your walk will end at the Trevi Fountain, and it is said that a visitor will return to Rome if they throw a coin with their right hand over their left shoulder into the Fountain. Then, enjoy some free time here to eat lunch or further explore.

After your free time, the walking tour continues past Piazza Venezia, where the monument known as Il Vittoriano is dedicated to King Victor Emmanuel II, the first king of Italy. You will stop for panoramic views just outside the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill on your way to the Colosseum, where you will be provided with time to capture photos of these historical sites from above.

Next you will enjoy an outside view of the Colosseum, a well-known landmark of the Eternal City. Then proceed to the Palatine Hill and Roman Forum, where you will be provided with skip-the-line tickets to explore the site that is widely regarded as the birthplace of the Roman Empire.

Continue on to the world-famous Vatican City, watching for the Castle of the Angels and Bernini's Bridge of the Angels, both of which can be seen on the way. You will be provided with approximately 45 minutes of free time at St. Peter's Square, before returning to Civitavecchia and your waiting cruise ship.

Please Note: This tour does not include an inside tour or tickets to the Colosseum, Roman Forum or Palatine Hill, but you will have the opportunity to view these sites from outside. Given the traffic in Rome, the itinerary may vary according to local conditions. Crowds are to be expected at all sites and lines for St. Peter's Basilica may exceed over one hour to enter. If fewer than nine people are on your tour, you will travel in a small vehicle with excellent access to all sights, and a guide who is also your driver will lead your tour.
