Sun Valley Plantation
Enjoy a 45-minute scenic countryside drive as we take you to Crescent Oracabessa, east of Ocho Rios, where the Sun Valley Plantation is located.
This is a working plantation and botanical farm owned and operated by Lorna and Nolly Binns. It sits along the Crescent River. On this Ocho Rios excursion, you will be treated to personal service every step of the way, as Lorna and her staff take you through a piece of Jamaican history and culture you will never forget. They offer enjoyable garden tours in a plantation setting.
Upon arrival, all guests are greeted with a welcome drink made with the current fruit in season.
You will have fun meeting and leisurely strolling about with your host on lands that are steeped in history, and have been producing a vast variety of tropical fruits and food for over 250 years. The 90-minute tour of the plantation tells the story of the property from the slave era to present day.
Learn about tropical fruits and plants, and the therapeutic and medicinal values of the trees, herbs, and spices that grow plentifully on the plantation. Along the way, you can sample a variety of fruits straight from the trees, like the mysterious jelly (coconut), Otaheite apple and other exotic fruits (depending on what is in season).
Keep your eyes open for hummingbirds and other local birds. This tour is a treat for the eyes, ears, nose and taste buds.
At the end of your tour on the plantation, you will have the opportunity to taste several of the regional dishes, along with a variety of natural juices.
Please note: Tour takes place outside. There is no large plantation Great House as you might see in the southern United States.

The tour was excellent. The family grows most of what they eat and it was fascinating to learn about all the different fruits and to see them growing. We were also able to sample many: coconut water, jack fruit, coconut, plantains, bananas, ackee, and several I've forgotten.

Ship's instructions for departure place and time were way off and we went to meet the van on the dock about two hours AFTER they left for the tour. The star rating is moot.

My husband and I were the only ones on the tour but the shuttle bus driver was fun to talk to. When we arrived, the guide walked us around and was very knowledgeable about all the trees and fruits. He also had a sense of humor to keep the tour fun! We got to see the men cut coconuts and drink samples of everything. We were allowed to smell the different leaves learn a lot! Afterwards they served us samples of different fruits and cooked plantain. The tour was slow and the tour guide allowed for all the questions we wanted to ask.

The tour is definitely unique, which is a good thing. It starts with a drive from the pier to the plantation. That's interesting in itself, as you get a chance to see Jamaica, off the beaten path. Once we arrived at the plantation, the tour guide was very personable and tailored the tour to our interests. We sampled some juice before the tour and had a full meal afterwards. During a 6 day cruise, I have more photos from this stop than anything else!
A little too long....very informative....and educational. Nice guide.
