The Other Malta and Palazzo Parisio

Located in the town of Naxxar is Palazzo Parisio, Malta's foremost aristocratic palace described by locals as a miniature Versailles. Constructed over the site of a former aristocrat's hunting lodge-turned-French barracks, this 19th century building reflects an Art Nouveau exterior with a Sicilian Baroque interior showcasing beautiful marble, fine frescoes, mirrored walls, rare paintings and extravagant gilding.

The Marquis Giuseppe Scicluna bought Palazzo Parisio in 1898 and it is through him that the property received its greatest renovation, which fortunately still survives today largely in its original form. The Marquis Scicluna, a wealthy Maltese banker and merchant; created a showcase for Maltese art which closes the eclectic style of the 19th century propagated by Italian artists on the island.

See the family chapel and grand ballroom, peer into the owner's study and imagine what it was like playing a spirited game in the billiard room.

The beautifully landscaped gardens are the only private gardens open to the public and are acclaimed as being amongst the finest in Europe. The opulent home and gardens house a restaurant and tea room and are a popular choice for destination weddings and other events.

Continue to one of Malta's leading wineries and be welcomed into its 400-year-old cellars to learn all about local wine making. While here, enjoy sampling a selection of wines and local savories before making your way back to port.
