Wailua River and Luau
Experience the best of Kauai with a wonderfully packaged excursion featuring a cruise on the Wailua River followed by one of Hawaii's most celebrated Luau experiences.
The Wailua River, a long, slowly meandering river that starts at the Wai'ale'ale Crater while being fed by many tributaries on the way to the ocean, is the only navigable river in Hawaii. For a unique Hawaiian adventure, try this cruise up river to the sacred Fern Grotto, a lava rock grotto covered with tropical ferns. Hawaiian musicians will serenade you at the grotto with traditional, local songs including the famous "Hawaiian Wedding Song." The superior acoustics within this natural amphitheater greatly enhance the music.
The Kauai tour usually takes approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes on a long, flat-bottom riverboat. While en route, you're likely to encounter kayakers, motorboats and water skiers. Watch for photo opportunities featuring tropical grasslands lining the river, and the majestic cloud-covered Mt. Waialeale in the background. You will also enjoy the overlook at Opaekaa Falls -- another romantic stop that will surely secure your love of this Garden Island. Following your day tour, you will be transported to a magical location for a memorable Luau experience.
For four generations, your hosts have treated guests to one of the most celebrated Luaus on the island of Kauai. Situated in the Wailua River Valley, the family's tropical gardens set the stage for a night to remember. The Luau honors the traditions of the Polynesian culture, with the main feature being the Pa'ina, or feast. A locally raisted pig is roasted in the Imu and served with a wide variety of local delicacies and desserts. Mai Tais, wine, beer, soda, water, and fruit punch are also served. Following the feast, guests are treated to customary songs and chants known as "mele," the lyrical sway of the Hawaiian Hula, the colorful precision of the Tahitian drum dances, and the fiery emotion of the Samoan fire knife dance.
Your hosts are proud to continue to honor the tradition of the Luau started more than 50 years ago by their grandfather. Join them as they share the "spirit of aloha." Afterwards, you will be driven back to the pier.

This was relaxing and the grotto was beautiful. The staff were friendly and entertainment on the boat was great. The lauu was very organized and had plenty of wonderful food. The grounds were nice to wonder around.
It was a lot of fun.
Wonderful excursion. The river cruise (which is not included when booking the same Luau through the ship) was relaxing, informative, fun, and well orchestrated. The grounds of the Smith Family Luau facility are beautiful. The food was excellent and the show fabulous.

We were unable to do the river cruise part of this tour due to silting of the river mouth. The Luau was fantastic though. Thank you Shore Excursions for offering to pay a partial refund for the day! No quibble and what an honourable business to do so. I would highly recommend this tour company. It is so good to meet genuine, friendly people who put your experience first!
