Hobart City Tour & MONA

Welcome to Hobart and an excursion that will heighten your senses, combining the history and lifestyle of this city with one of the most interesting cultural attractions of the area: the Museum of Old and New Art.

Hobart is a city of yachts and spinnakers, gardens and galleries, sandstone cottages and stately Georgian homes, a city built on the pain and toil of yesteryear English convicts. Pass through Salamanca Place and its restored sandstone warehouses, now repurposed as cafes, galleries, and shops. Proceed then through Battery Point, filled with quaint historic cottages, Georgian mansions, and cafes.

Continue on through the suburb of South Hobart to the Cascade Gardens at the foot of the historic Cascade Brewery building. View the outside of this unique example of early architecture in a lovely garden setting before your next stop to see the exterior of the ruins of the Female Factory, a one-time prison for female convicts and mentioned in Bryce Courtenay's novel, "The Potato Factory." Your journey continues as you return to the city streets before heading across the Tasman Bridge, which spans the Derwent River, and stop at Rosny Park Lookout. Views of Hobart from the Eastern Shore with Mount Wellington as a backdrop make for a great photo opportunity. Enjoy free time to explore the exquisite Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens before continuing on your tour.

Your city tour finishes at Hobart's Ferry Terminal, where you will board a modern catamaran for a 30-minute journey up the Derwent River to the museum. From the first glimpse of this striking building rising from the cliffs on the riverbanks, be prepared to experience the controversial and enthralling nature that constitutes the foundation of this celebrated establishment, housing Australia's largest private collection of art and artifacts. MONA exhibitions deliberately set out to take people out of their comfort zone, and get them thinking and talking. You will have two and a half hours to explore the museum, and perhaps enjoy some wine or sample a unique boutique beer, all produced on site and available for purchase. You are booked on a return ferry from MONA to the Brooke Street Pier, which is just a short stroll back to the port.
